Our Guide to Perfect Sweater Weather Style

Now that winter is on the verge, it's time to embrace the humble sweater. But being a wardrobe staple doesn't mean it has to be boring. Cute sweaters, sexy sweaters, or casual sweaters, there is a knit top with your name on it.

The sweater has been around in fashion circles ever since Coco Chanel debuted them in her collections in the 1920s. Before that, women knitted the garments for their working men, think sailors, fishermen, and farmers, from wool, which kept them warm and dry. If that doesn't sound like sexy sweater folklore to you, consider how the cable knit and sailor stripe sweaters are still on-trend centuries later. Proving that to wear a sweater is to always be wearing a classic.

Women's sweaters in particular, have become one of the most versatile items of clothing you can buy. No doubt you have a selection in your drawers and closets already. But like a great LBD, you can never have too many. Especially given how many places, and how many occasions, make sweater dressing the perfect choice.

Sexy Sweaters

Whether you want a look for date night, or for a girl's night out, a sweater can be alluring. Consider the "sweater girls" of the 1940s and 50s, like Jane Russell and Lana Turner, who famously wore tight knits to accentuate their curves. Today's sexy sweaters aren't necessarily tight at all, instead they can have open stitch patterns, cutouts, and other elements that ramp up the glam, like this Long-Sleeve Stitchy Marl Pullover.

Trendy Sweaters

We mentioned the iconic sailor stripe sweaters, including Chanel's own take on the trend. Since the original Breton sweaters and shirts, fashion designers continue to create striped sweaters with variations on the pattern. Our Mock Neck Stripe Pullover takes the classic black and white stripe and plays with size and form in a sweater that's on trend, but always in style.

Casual Sweaters

Of course, sweaters are also meant to keep us warm and cozy, and this Zip-Neck Ribbed Pullover in pink (one of the year's biggest color hits) achieves the goal beautifully. So, go on, Netflix and chill to your heart's content.

Business Casual Sweaters

With the acceptance of casual attire at the office, dressy sweaters made from refined knits that can be layered under a blazer are a perfect choice for creating a business casual style. Our Sleeveless Cutout Mock Neck is a sexy twist on sweater dressing, but under a blazer it's a fabulously chic look.

Sweater Coats

For those days that aren't freezing, but there is a chill in the air, we have the sweater coat. Lighter than traditional outerwear, yet more polished looking than a jean jacket or cardigan, the sweater coat keeps you warm, and easily (and stylishly) layers over any outfit. Take our Fringe Shawl Sweater Coat as an example of the quintessential lightweight topper for casual outfits.
